The Medal of Honor
Sometimes know as the Congressional Medal of Honor


Medal of Honor at the tank museum



The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in the United States.

This award is bestowed upon those men and women who served in the armed services of the United States.

They served with a strength of mind and spirit, which enabled them to encounter danger with firmness and personal bravery.

Their actions saved many of their fellow soldiers.






Medal of Honor Facts :

To date only 3,456 Medals of Honor have been awarded since 1862. Today only approximately 150 recipients of this medal still survive.

The first and only women to receive this award was Dr. Mary E. Walker, a contract surgeon during the Civil War.

A total of 85 Medal of Honor's were awarded to African American soldiers. The first African American soldier to receive this award was George Wanton, a private in the 10th U. S. Cavalry.

There is 65 awarded medals to soldiers that served in a Cavalry regiment, unit or division.

There is 20 awarded medals to soldiers that served in an Armoured regiment, unit, or division and that also includes the soldiers that served in the Air Cavalry (Air cav).

Archer T. Gammon The Museum wanted to include this recipient as this gentleman is from Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and was a tanker.
